Professional mover finds $16,500 in rare antiquities in the trash

Five years after the Queens rubbish remover, http://www.dimolabros.com, took home a mysterious barrel from a SoHo apartment, he opened it to find dozens of ancient Mexican artifacts.

The mix of bowls, figurines and jugs were made between 300 B.C. and 500 A.D., some by Mayans.

They're worth an estimated $16,500 - and DiMola said he's not at all surprised.

"There's always something in the garbage worth money," he said.

DiMola, 39, came to own the booty when his Ridgewood company was hired to clear the cluttered space of abstract artist Clinton Hill, who died in 2003.

Hill left his possessions to his longtime partner, Allen Tran, who died just months later, said John Koegel, a lawyer for their estates.

The couple's property fell to friends, who formed a nonprofit foundation to take the valuables from the studio.

Hill's estate paid DiMola about $4,500 in October 2004 to clean out the artist's Prince St. apartment, studio and basement storage.

The scuffed cardboard barrel was mistakenly considered trash and DiMola stuck it in a warehouse, where it collected dust for years.

He recently decided to peek inside just to see what treasure might await.

Even though no one intended to toss out the artifacts, Koegel said the foundation has no legal claim to recoup them from DiMola.

"If he is given a contract by the owner of property to remove and dispose of certain things, if the owner makes the mistake, that's the way it is," Koegel said.

Still, the attorney declined to congratulate DiMola on his find.

"I'm not happy for him," Koegel said. "I'm sorry that [barrel] slipped through the cracks."

The most valuable object that DiMola brought to upper East Side art dealer Howard Nowes for appraisal was a $1,000 stone ax god - perhaps intended as a sacrifice - from the Mezcala region of Mexico.

As for the pieces' future, DiMola said he first planned to pack them back into the barrel. He doesn't collect ancient art, so he said he was open to selling the pieces.

A HISTORY OF WASTE

PEOPLE HAVE BEEN MAKING GARBAGE SINCE THE BEGINNING OF HISTORY.
In our early history as hunter / gathers, waste wasn’t much of a problem because garbage was organic (meaning it readily decomposed in nature), minimal, and dispersed because people were always on the move. Managing waste became an issue as an agrarian society emerged, which is evidenced by the first intentional landfill, developed around 500 BC in Greece. Waste as an issue then rapidly accelerated with industrialization, massive population growth, and the ever-increasing use of inorganic materials such as plastics in daily life. Our recent experience in the US bears this out.
In the years following the end of World War II in 1945, several changes in American society triggered an increase in the production of garbage. The population reached an all time high, so more people than ever were making garbage. The economy was booming so the average American had more money to buy more products. Television had become the rage. Popular TV programs were paid for by advertisers whose commercials encouraged viewers to buy, buy, and buy. From the farm based economy of the nation’s early history in which many people provided their own food, clothing and house wares, 20th century America developed into a consumer economy. It was based on the buying and selling of goods and services that seemed to be endless.

By the 1960s and 70s, lifestyle changes were also taking place. More women were finding jobs outside the home. Families often relied on takeout food or frozen dinners and microwave meals that could be prepared quickly. These substitutes for home-cooked meals came with a lot of packaging in plastic, paper, foil, and foam. Items that could be used once and thrown away were convenient for busy people. By the 1980s, countless disposable products such as diapers, razors, and lighters, had replaced items that were once used and reused over and over again.
It wasn’t just the quantity of garbage that had changed. It was the quality. In the early part of the 20th century, most American garbage consisted of food waste. With the development of new materials, especially plastics, a growing portion of garbage was made of inorganic materials, some of which is almost indestructible. That's good if you're making something that's built to last. It's bad when it becomes trash. Construction waste is increasingly made of such materials.
As our rural communities become suburban, as is now quickly occurring up and down the East Coast, the sitting of new landfills is becoming increasingly difficult and costly. This along with more stringent landfill regulations are making it increasingly less expensive to recycle, most notably in populated regions.

Maintaining Air Quality during Demolition

During demolition it is very important to maintain air quality. With this goal in mind, we keep HEPA air purifiers constantly running during interior demolitions. The HEPA air purifiers remove particulates and odors. As carpets and drywall are removed, dust in the air passes through the HEPA filters. Once the air is purified it is released out the back of the unit. The filters are constantly being monitored and every few hours as the filters are changed and replaced with new filters. This ensures that air quality is maintained for the people are that are working as well as the other tenants inside the building.

In addition to using HEPA air purifiers to maintain air quality during the demolition of the existing space, we also took a close look at the existing HVAC system. Inside the space we add additional filters to ensure that we were not redistributing dust and other particulates in the air to other areas of the floor space. We also used box filters and an extra layer of filters on all return ducts. This ensures that we were not bringing polluted air back into the HVAC system and redistributing the air to other areas of the building where other tenants would be impacted.
